missing education

one of the striking things about India Untouched for me is
George's commitment and contributions like "Journalism school" and "Tillany Museum" -
which most of us don't even think about in terms of education. we
constantly talk about 5000 years of culture and great advances made in
art, music, science you name it but fail to realize that these are no
longer in the agenda. We are now completely driven by an agenda set by
somebody else - being the back office for the rest of the world is good
for employment but is it coming at the cost of slowly losing our
relevance..our current education system does not encourage sports, arts
and even within the realm of academics any real creative thinking
except for maybe few top rated schools in the country that are
extremely hard to get into. Despite all the things that are broken, its
quite amazing how our current generation makes itself marketable and
builds an almost unquestionable reputation of "land of IT" . this
quality of adapting to what the 'market' needs gives me the confidence
that when the agenda is reset and the artists and musicians and poets
are considered to be the "in" thing, we might see that transformation
-but first, we need better training for the teachers and change the
philosophy of how kids are graded and how various career options are
percieved by young minds and more importantly their parents who dictate
most kids' career path
